CSMOA have been in regular communication with Cricket Scotland and ICC on the new umpire recruitment and training courses recently introduced by ICC.

The Management Committee have also discussed, and decided that the new ICC umpire education pathway realises a number of benefits to existing and potential CSMOA umpire members.

So, with immediate effect we will switch our new recruitment & development training over to ICC courses.

In summary:

• CSMOA Level 1 course will be replaced by ICC Umpire Foundation Course. This is 100% online, and can be undertaken at any time. There is a series of questions at the end of the course that have to be answered 100% to obtain the certificate. Upon successful completion of the course, this will enable umpire membership of CSMOA and a Category 5 rating. The CSMOA Category 4/5 development officer will offer further CPD modules during the first year of membership.

• CSMOA Level 2 course will be replaced by ICC Umpire Course Level 1. This is a hybrid course, where the first part is online and a follow on from the foundation course. Again participants have to pass the questions at the end to continue onto the second face to face element of the course. This is a two-day face to face practical element delivered by ICC accredited tutors. Ideally students of this course will have at least 12 months experience of on field umpiring. This is a big shift change from our current course material.

• CSMOA Level 3 course will be replaced by ICC Umpire Course Level 2. This element is still under development and not yet available. When completed, this is aimed at umpires who wish to proceed to a higher level of umpiring, initially aimed at our Category 1 and above umpires.

• There are also a number of additional CPD resources available for individuals to undertake online training, this will accredited on line, with the information accessible by Cricket Scotland and CSMOA.

The ICC modules as detailed above are very new (Level 1, launched in February 2024), and have been initially trialled and then implemented in a number of countries worldwide. By adopting these courses early, we believe will give us an ideal recruitment, training and development opportunities for our umpire members, as well as providing our members with worldwide recognised qualifications.

If anyone has any constructive questions/observations/queries, please don’t hesitate to give me to contact Neil Cauldwell (CSMOA Umpires Manager).

We will issue details of the tutor opportunities to members via WTU in due course.

Car Parking arrangements for CSMOA officials at Hughenden (Hillhead Cricket Club; WDCU Premiership 2)

CSMOA officials are asked to make note of the following arrangements for car parking for any SATURDAY umpiring appointments to Hillhead Cricket Club (Hughenden, Glasgow) from 1st April 2024 onwards.

Parking charges for using the designated parking bays in Hughenden Road / Lane have been increased as in all other areas within Glasgow. Sorry BUT there is NO parking available within our grounds.

These charges apply from 08.00 till 18.00 Monday- Saturday (inclusive). There are therefore NO restrictions for parking for midweek cricket activities after 18.00, ONLY SATURDAY COMPETITIVE FIXTURES.

Visitors scratch card car parking vouchers ( £5 for 6 hours , 12.00 till 18.00 ) are available from our ground floor reception at Café Source too. This represents good value, given, if they were not available, the charge is £1 / every 15 minutes.

It is our intention to provide each of the match officials with a Parking voucher for each 1st XI game.

It is suggested that the visitors to Hillhead Cricket Club might consider car sharing when they travel to play at Hughenden on Saturdays.

Secretary – Hillhead Cricket Club & CSMOA Member (details available on WTU)

With the new season fast approaching CSMOA is finalising plans for our 2023 pre-season training and development programme.

As part of this, a sponsorship opportunity has been identified to help enable us to better support our new umpire members with a "starter pack" containing a few essential items, sent just in time for their first official appointment with CSMOA.

A “starter pack”  will consist of a counter, bails, cards & Law Book that will be provided to new probationary umpires immediately prior to their first appointment, costing approximately £15 per pack, with CSMOA seeking support for around 30 of these, costing £500.

Following an incident that took place during Saturday’s game between Greenock and Stenhousemuir, CSMOA have issued the following statement:

CSMOA condemns in the strongest possible terms the behaviour that took place at Greenock on Saturday.

Racism has no place in society or in sport. CSMOA will continue to support our members who are subject to such situations.

As this incident is now part of a live criminal case, it is inappropriate to comment further. However, CSMOA can confirm it is working in conjunction with Cricket Scotland, WDCU and Greenock Cricket Club to ensure internal disciplinary proceedings proceed swiftly and appropriately, following due process.

The Support in Sport service offers free help and guidance to staff, players and officials involved in Scottish cricket. A dedicated phone number – 07702 565916 – is available for anyone who requires support.

We are in receipt of all League fixtures for 2023 and have started the process of keying these onto WTU. We are also in receipt of the Scottish & Challenge Cup draws too.

Whilst it is early, we have commenced the task of appointing umpires to fixtures in Week 1 of the league season & Round 1 of the Scottish Cup (Sunday 7 May 2023).

We would therefore urge umpires where possible to start updating their availability to make this task easier & hopefully widen our coverage.

Thanks to those umpires who have already updated their availability - it is greatly appreciated.
